"I worry about how many children read.  Libraries are more important today than when I was a kid."   John Grisham

The Hampton Public Library in sponsorship with the First Bank Hampton is offering for the first time a program called "1000 Books Before Kindergarten."  This program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children.  By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000 book goal in three years.  The program is free of charge and is for children birth through five years of age.  Children receive a free book for every 200 books read and an HPL t-shirt when they reach their goal of 1,000 books. Parents can register their child(ren) in the children's department of the Library.

The Hampton Public Library Board of Trustees will meet in regular session on Wednesday, May 18th @ 5:15 pm in the Library.  Everyone is invited to attend. On the agenda; May bills, update on building, finalize budget, and library reports.

Hampton Public Library in the Fall

As you probably already know, the project has received more bad news.  The curved wall of the original 110 year old building  now has to be torn completely down.  This adds another $90,000 to $100,000 to the project.  The Foundation has agreed to give the City another $50,000 to help with the additional cost.  Now it is up to the City to decide what to do, because the City owns the building.  If you want to see this old building restored to its historical look, contact City Hall at 456-4853 to let the Council know how you feel about the project.  Thanks again to everyone who donated to this project.  It was outstanding to have the community's support and now your support is more important than ever!
